Flash Bangs

When I decided to create these flash bangs, I wanted them to have a somewhat worn out look, as if they had been carried around from place to place but never had the chance to be used.

The initial idea was to make a scene where they were sitting on top of an ammo crate in a warehouse, kind of a hideout, but I never got around to finishing that scene, it will eventually happen.

Making these grenades involves a multi-step process:

First I modeled and UV mapped them in Maya.

When I was done with that I took it to Mari, where I created different sets of maps to create a shader later on. Pleased with the textures, I pumped out a diffuse, specular and bump map among other maps.

The diffuse map gives it color and some shading

The bump map indicates where things like bumps, creases, dents or wrinkles are present

The specular map dictates how shiny the surface appears to be

After having these maps done, I take them to 3ds Max to create a shader, apply it to my model and process out renders using V-Ray.
Once I have the render, I use Nuke to do some color correction.

Programs used: Autodesk Maya, The Foundry Mari, 3ds Max, V-Ray for 3ds Max, The Foundry Nuke
